MOZARTIANA (Tchaikovsky / Balanchine
One of George Balanchine's last masterpieces; choreographed in 1981 when he was 77 years old and already in ill health, MOZARTIANA (Tchaikovsky's Orchestral Suite #4), was made as part of the NYC Ballet's 1981 Tchaikovsky Festival. This 1983 performance was filmed shortly after his death in April, and in my opinion is one of the greatest live performance films of his ballets. The three leads, Suzanne Farrell, Ib Andersen, and Victor Castelli, are in top form, and perfectly demonstrate the Balanchine ideal. His musicality, inventive choreography which still uses the traditional ballet vocabulary, and judicial use of children, are all hallmarks of the true Balanchine style. Nothing exaggerated, but everything in an almost divine harmony.

“I first met Amiruddin two years ago when he came to LA to study with me for a few weeks after graduating from the school of the Royal Ballet. He wanted to get some Balanchine attack and speed to broaden his training. Since then we’ve worked on several short films he’s developed, including a documentary he wanted to do on me. This little excerpt from my Oberon in my A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM wa...

America's first Prima Ballerina Assoluta, Maria Tallchief, was a Native American (Osage Nation), and George Balanchine's 3rd wife. She was known internationally as one of the greatest ballerinas of her era, and was largely responsible for the success of the New York City Ballet during its formation (1948) and early years, through the mid 1960's. Her performances in ballets Balanchine made for h...

Suzanne Farrell and Sean Lavery ‘Chaconne' Chore George Balanchine

I actually prefer this live performance with Sean Lavery to the PBS broadcast one of CHACONNE. Farrell looks stronger and sharper here, and takes more chances, and Sean doesn’t copy any of Martins mannerisms so I can really “see the music,” as Balanchine liked to say. For some reason in the Martins performance the steps don’t seem to fit the music as well as they do here. I think this might be ...

BLACK TIGHTS (film w/ Zizi Jeanmaire and Cyd Charisse)

A very unusual film in that it has four complete ballets by Roland Petit. Two feature his wife, the incredible Zizi Jeanmaire, and one with Cyd Charisse, and the other starring Moira Shearer. Narrated by Maurice Chevalier. It's a wonderful snapshot into Petit's very specific French style, but also these three ballerinas in the twilight of their dancing careers.

Me with the great Melissa Hayden, who the NY TIMES critic, Clive Barnes, once called “America’s Prima Ballerina Assoluta,” in some silent excerpts of CORTEGE HONGROIS. A couple clips in the Pas are from that 1st Matinee when I barely had learned the choreography (I can tell because I’m wearing my corps costume from DIAMONDS before they made me my own costume), and some are from a later show. Just the end of the coda with Ellen Bauer and the 17 yr-old Damian Woetzel, and Finale of John Taras’s staging of SLEEPING BEAUTY ACT III (1984) and the last performances of my Los Angeles Ballet. I really liked John’s staging because it moved so much and he kept the tempo brisk. So often I’ve seen this ballet so slow it loses all its fun and excitement. The venue was the John Anson Ford Amphit...

From a PBS 1983 broadcast, here is Suzanne Farrell and Sean Lavery, in top form. This was the year Balanchine died, but I'm not sure if this was filmed before, or after his death. In any case, it's a wonderful live performance testament to his choreography, and also his training.

When I was learning my craft (remember Balanchine brought me to NYC at 19 as a choreographer first), he wanted me to watch every performance. “Watch and learn,” he said. He also sat with me lighting my 8 ballets for the company, so I learned firsthand how crucial lighting was to him. In LA VALSE this Is tremendously important. Here are two sections where the lights are everything. The first is ...

When I choreograph for schools or universities I always try to use as many dancers as I can...

I know Mr. B. did not particularly like the German films of his ballets, but I think this one is very beautiful. The lighting emphasizes the spirituality of the piece especially. Surprised that Mazzo did not "let down her hair." I wonder when that touch was added.

I also saw Lavery dance with Farrell at NYCB as a last-minute replacement for an injured Ib Anderson in MOZARTIANA, & he was *brilliant* that night...nervousness may have given him an extra edge. And that's a HARD male part for someone w/ legs as long as his were. I don't know if he ever danced it again after that night.

Also, as much as I liked Merrill Ashley's dancing, I saw her in CHACONNE after Suzanne retired & thought she was a very wrong choice...she didn't have at all the abandon that Suzanne brought to this role. I just don't think NYCB is going to see an artist like Farrell again soon. They don't come along like that much, with that level of soul & daring. Her dancing changed my life!

JC, you may have seen my remarks on the other link of this perf that you posted. I said there, in short, that I LOVE this perf, & while I think Sean's beats aren't as clean/sharp as Martins's, his dancing is so much more expressive & musical, & his longer legs look lovely here even w/ his not-great feet. Suzanne as always is just gorgeous, & riskily off-balance here. My ques to you is: how did she always manage to dance these hard ballets & keep her mouth closed? That's HARD!

So happy to have read what you wrote about Mathias, John. For me, he is the most complete, classical dancer I've ever seen: gorgeous body, superb, clean technique and such astounding and delicate musicality. I may be wrong; but I think, in order to achieve this level of artistry, you have to approach the work with humility and leave your ego " en dehors, out the door." I''d love to see you choreograph something for him.

She came to the University of Oklahoma School of Dance in 2008 - I was a junior ballet faculty member there. She taught our dancers for a week. I picked her up at her hotel everyday and took her to the studios. Little did she know in Corpus Christi in the 1960’s my Grandmother had picked her up at the airport and had driven her to her dance studio in her new white Mustang, which my Grandmother said Violette loved and commented on. Ms. Verdy was in Corpus Christi assessing the ballet studios there as they were applying for “civic ballet status.” My Grandmother said the area was denied the status a civic ballet at the time. I was too embarrassed in 2008 to even bring it up. I thought she wouldn’t remember and I didn’t want her too feel bad that they had been denied. Anyways, I just thought it was funny that my Grandmother and I had both driven Violette in our cars with a 50 year gap. History sure does have a way of cycling back again! Her ballet classes were PERFECTION, she was one of the most ATTENTIVE and UPLIFTING teachers I’ve ever had the pleasure of taking from. Even though I was on faculty I took her class as I felt if I didn’t, I would seriously regret it. I knew there was a genius dancer in front of me and I must experience her class firsthand. NO regrets!!! The sparkle in her eyes, her wit, her quickness, her humor, and her perfected dancing was a wonder to behold, and I’ll always treasure and remember her!!!!!🩷🩰🩷 Thank you Violette! Also after watching this video, now at 45 years old, I’m able to execute a gorglliade correctly!!!! Watching her somehow unlocked something within me with that step!🩰🤗
